ABOUT ME

About Josh

I’m a Counselling Therapist, registered with ACTA and a psychoanalyst. That means I listen to people for a living — but not the way you might think.

I don’t hand out worksheets. I don’t assign homework. I don’t teach you coping strategies and send you on your way. What I do is pay very close attention to what you’re saying — and to what you’re not saying — until we start to understand, together, why you keep ending up in the same place.

I trained as a Clinical Psychologist in Ecuador, where psychoanalysis isn’t the niche it is in North America — it’s a living tradition, woven into how mental health is actually practised. That foundation shaped everything about how I work.

From there I moved to New York, where I completed my Master’s degree in Psychoanalysis. Between Ecuador and New York I spent over a decade working with people across the full spectrum of mental health — including severe mental illness — learning from mentors and supervisors who contributed more to my formation than any textbook ever could.

Now I’m based in Calgary and I’ve built my practice entirely online — on purpose. Not as a pandemic compromise. Remote-first is a deliberate choice because I believe access to deep, quality mental health support shouldn’t depend on where you live, whether you can leave your house, or whether there’s a therapist’s office near your bus route.

Outside of private practice, I run a project called The Healers’ Guild. I wrote a free handbook for people who want to offer mental health support in their communities — not to replace therapists, but because the world needs more people who know how to listen well. The core idea is simple: you don’t need a wall of degrees to help someone. You need curiosity and kindness. Everything else can be learned.

That said — some things do require professional depth. That’s where the clinical work comes in. When the patterns are old, deep, and keep repeating no matter what you try, you need someone trained to sit with you in the dark until it starts to make sense. That’s what I do.
